Wow it’s been a long time coming if you are managing your own Google Places page and or Google plus pages. For Local marketers it’s been a disturbing factor considering all the power they have over there at Google.

I’m new to Google Places for Business and have fewer than 10 locations?

Just visit http://places.google.com and start setting up your listings! Note that only some new signups in the US will see the new dashboard. We are planning to open the new dashboard up to all new signups very soon.

I’m a new user to Google Places for Business with a service-area business. How do I proceed?

If you serve customers at their locations, you can designate yourself as a service-area business in your listing editor. Beneath your address information, select the checkbox for My business has service areas where I visit customers at their locations. You will be able to set a service area based on the zip codes or cities you serve, or on a given area around your location.

I’d like to know more about Insights.

To see insights for a listing, navigate to Edit the business information, then click on the Insights tab.

Why can’t I see this updated dashboard?

We are doing a gradual rollout that will start with a subset of new users in the U.S. Then, we will gradually make this service available to a larger group of both existing and new users in the weeks to come.

How can I integrate with Google+?

Right now, Google+ integration is not yet available, but it’s coming soon. Soon, you’ll be able to upgrade a listing to a local Google+ page, right from Google Places for Business. We’ll let you know (with more details) when that’s available.

No, you can add and edit a listing via Google Places for Business without a Google+ profile. You can also access AdWords Express and Offers. However, in order to access the social features (Posts, Circles, Videos), the verified business owner account will need to be associated with a Google+ profile.

Can I have more than one verified business owner account per page?

At this time, there can only be one verified business owner account per page.

Post engagement from third party sites

Lot’s of people use third party applications to post to and from Facebook. I have done this myself as it can be a time saver. What you need to know is the fact that it is one of the few reasons your engagement may be down for your posts. Since Facebook has implemented the use of promoted posts and other features, things are quite different from the early days of building your audience for fan pages.

If you are not aware of the recent changes your pages could get stuck in this rut of less likes and comments. When Pages first came out and for some time after, if you posted from your page it was thought and pretty well true that you were reaching all of your fans. So if you posted to your page you would reach all of your fans. Now things are quite different. When you post from your page, Facebook determines how many fans you will reach. The percentage is downright horrible, they are going to factor in your pagerank and come up with a number of fans that will see your post. Depending on how active your page is will determine just how many fans you can reach with each post. I’ve read that the numbers could be as low as 16% of your audience will see your posts on a regular basis. This is why it is so important now to keep your page active all the time.

If you are posting to twitter and having your tweets post to your page on Facebook you are not going to show up in too many newsfeeds of your fans for that post. This was a mistake I learned the hard way and I spent some good quality time and effort thinking I was reaching my audience with great content when all along I was only reaching my twitter base. The best way to get interaction, likes and comments is to post directly on your Facebook page. I would love to hear what you’ve experienced using a third party application as I am only referring to the use of Twitter posts to Facebook for the purpose of this article.

I have heard the same from others using such sites as Hootsuite and Tweetdeck but there are many others out there. If you can help it I recommend that you post directly to your Facebook page from Facebook. Always post relevant content to your page and we know everyone loves pictures. So in order to grow your page and get more fans I recommend not to use any third party apps.

While we are on the topic of getting fans. You may also want to know about promoted posts. These are a terrific way to reach more of an audience and in relation to Facebook ads it is a cost effective way to reach more people as Facebook ads can be a bit more expensive. There is one problem with promoted posts. You can Not or do not even have the option unless you have a fan count of 400 fans or more. This I’m sure presents a problem for many pages that are local pages and don’t have a national reach or need one. If you own a local pizza shop in a somewhat small town having 300 fans would be a great accomplishment not to mention you would be reaching almost all of your customers. But with the new pagerank / algorithm facebook is using without promoted posts your only going to reach a small percentage of your fans. There has been a lot of talk about Facebook likes and what they may be worth and the quality of likes opposed to quantity. I felt as though it’s a good enough topic to discuss and it’s been awhile per usual since my last post.

I have lot’s of discussions with other social media managers and page owners and one of the most important things I like to get across is how important it is to get quality likes for a page and not just quantity. My biggest qualm with that whole debate on quantity over quality is that when you go and buy likes, or obtain unrelated likes from maybe a giveaway of sorts. A lot of pages will give away an Ipad in return for liking a page. Now You may have a page about baseball and the person liking your page is a woman that want’s a new Ipad and knows nothing nor has any interest at all in baseball. What good is that like to your page? It is no good at all, you can’t connect with that person or her friends because she’s not going to be very engaging with your page when in fact she really hate’s baseball..lol

Another reason to have quality over quantity is the ranking system on Facebook called pagerank. If you have a page of 600 committed fans that are engaging you on every post. You are going to have a better pagerank over a page with 10k likes and hardly any engagement. The fake fans are a tactic used for one thing and only one thing. That is to convince new visitors that the page is more important by having a lot of likes and the visitor may feel compelled to like the page also. “Again, another fake or bad like” Now that page has one more lame fan.  There is some good information and research that ClickZ wrote about here. I had found an interesting article on one of my new favorite social media news and information sites Performinsider.com and you can see what they wrote about this topic here also. Business owners need to understand that this is the new media and we can reach the world just as easy as we can reach our neighbors. Every customer is a potential super fan. If your page can have a few super fans you are going to see a lot of activity. There is another hot topic that I’m going to have to save for another post and that is the power of promoted posts and what they are up to on facebook. How to link your facebook to twitter

Let’s start with why you would want to link your facebook page “your business page” to twitter. Some people don’t have lot’s of time to spend on their social media, but we all should know how important it is to getting recognized as well as the possibility of gaining a new customer or fan. If you don’t have a twitter account already go to www.twitter.com and make one for your business.

This will also help your website with linking and show a bit more authority to the search engines when you have your website listed on all of your social media sites. So without getting to in depth on how important it is I will just tell you that you should have an account on all the major social sites.

Linking your Facebook page to your twitter account

First thing you need to do is log onto facebook as your business page! From there go to the edit page section by selecting the drop down menu next to your name. Then you want to click on the Resources link on the left as shown in the picture below

Once you click that you will be taken to the next screen that should look like this.

 

Now you are going to be asked to change back to using facebook as a person. Don’t be afraid to click this you will not lose any information, it should look like this.

Once you click here you will be brought to a page that will list all of the pages you are an admin of on Facebook. If you only have one then just select that one. If you have more than one make sure you select the correct page you are linking to twitter. Be prepared to enter your twitter name and password so that they will connect to Facebook.

Once this is complete you are ready to put twitter to work for you even without going there. Every post you make on your Facebook page will be transferred to twitter as a tweet. Text and photo’s, so you will now have an active twitter account. If you don’t know much about twitter yet it’s a great way to start. People will see your posts/tweets and friend / follow you on twitter. I hope this helps someone that may have been a little worried or even scared to use this function as I can tell you from experience it is a great tool.

How to stay on top of your competition

One of the main things we can do when trying to build our reputation in any market is being noticed. I see all to often businesses that are not optimized to stay on top of the competition. Lot’s of businesses have a great service or product but when you can’t be found what good is it.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is companies that don’t utilize the power of Social Media. Two things happen here.

1. They set up a business page on one network that usually being Facebook and when they don’t see any activity, likes, or sharing they just toss in the towel and say that isn’t working for us.

2. They set up a business page and somehow think that people are going to flock to it because they have a page! Then nothing happens and they see it as useless.

These two scenarios are all to common and can be fixed and made useful if they actually put the time or effort into maintaining their presents on Facebook.

You can’t just create a page and expect people to flock to it and share it just because it’s there, nor can you expect results from a page that has under 100 fans. A local business can actually make use of a page that has under 100 fans depending on the type of business it is. As long as these fans are all local fans you will be able to engage them and grow your page.  My advise is to keep at it, even if you think nobody is listening or seeing your posts. The more you use it the more likely you are to get noticed.

The key to any business page is to keep at it, understand that you can’t build a fan page over night it takes time. Even if it takes 6 months to a year if you are posting regularly you will start seeing progress. The other thing is don’t use your business page to make sales. I know sounds crazy right, that’s why you wanted to be on Facebook so you could increase your sales. Well guess what? Just by being there and communicating with your fans you are building a community of trust worthy fans. When the time comes that someone needs your product or service guess who they are going to think of first. Your business, why because they have seen you posting and keeping them entertained or just providing some helpful tips regarding your industry. Those things stick with people even though you can’t see it. If you are following my suggestions and providing them with content on Facebook that is actually useful or even just fun facts, your business will be on their mind when it comes time to make a purchase.

The Google Bomb!

Just when you were about to count them out

Google launches a whole array of news updates changes and hold on to your hat kind of stuff that either pisses you off, or you are excited about all the new features. I believe everyone was a bit thrown off unless you are a search junkie or work in the field.  Here is a great post from Search Engine Watch about some of the changes and how Google is completely in control and will be giving Facebook a nice challenge.

There is only one way to the top

From me: Searching on Google is now better than ever, it may be ruffling lot’s of feathers from business owners to SEO companies and individuals.  The truth is it’s getting social. Google knows what you are searching for just by the phrases you use in the search, and people are getting more and more savvy when it comes to searching as well. Like using the correct terms and adding a location to their search. These were things that the SEO Community relied on that the user searching was going to use common phrases and therefore going after a set of keywords that would result in the desired destination. A little confusing yes I hope I didn’t ruin the moment..

Well it is perfectly clear what Google has been up to for the last year or so. Getting everyone excited about the their Google places page was no accident. That was preparation for the now Google Local and Google + business pages. Everyone’s Places page is now a Google+ Page and much to the likeness of a facebook page with some even better feature’s. I don’t want to go on about what changes have been made and what’s better than what. What I will say is you better have your Google stuff in order and get ready to spread the word. Your Google + Page is now indexed as well so any content you share there will also have an impact on your results. I can’t encourage you enough to use and get used to using Google+ for business.

They also rolled out a cool mobile app feature for your business where you can create a deal for customers if you have a brick and mortar location. I see a whole lot more of mobile coming from Google and I just want you to be aware of what’s going on around us in the search world.

Here is some great info from Yelp.com stating that 85% of Consumers use the internet to find local businesses. I couldn’t agree more with this article. The Original article from Search Engine Land also states that 72% of Consumers Trust Online Reviews as much as personal recommendations. Reviews are the next best thing to Paid advertisement even better in fact. If you can maintain and get your customers talking about your business you are going to have the upper hand over your competitors.

New search results and how to rank higher

Google Places is changing the search results

If you haven’t noticed if you are searching for a product or service you are going to see results that are listed with balloons ranking from A to Z of course the first page is only going to list A through G and that is considered the first page! This is the New search results. I’ve been doing marketing for local businesses for just over a year and I am confidant that I can get any business to the top using knowledge that I have learned through hours months and years of research and training. I was going to title this post link building with street cred, because there is a lot of linking that needs to be done to gain the recognition from Google that is going to be credible and reliable for them to recognize it.

You can’t just start throwing links around in your site and building backlinks from any site you can think of, trying to get as many links as you can. What that will do is get you to the bottom of a search if not thrown out completely. You need to be strategic and know the authority sites that have the street cred I’m referring to. You want to research and do your homework before you start building your link strategy. For instance do a search for the term you are trying to rank for and see where the results are coming from. This is a true live example telling  you which sites hold authority with the search engine. I am in the process of writing an ebook that teaches you step by step how to dominate the search results page for any business. But for now I’m going to give you some great nuggets of info that will get you moving in the right direction. I can’t write a blog post long enough to give you everything in detail. Which by the way is one of the points / tips for learning how to rank your site for search. Keep your blog posts relativity short. No shorter than 300 words but no longer than say 1000. this enables the search spiders to clearly see what you are posting and grab the info they are looking for to determine your authority. Such as Links, key words and back-links. This would be a back link, here is a post I wrote about my marketing business being rated #3 but since then It has climbed to #2 :) Here I have placed a link directing back to my site which is a good thing for search engines to see, just don’t over do it. In that I have used keywords that match what I would like to rank for. Marketing and business, This is not the same as ranking for the number one spot on Google places although it does play a part!

This post is already too long and I feel I need to give you more information to take away and implement on your own site or your clients sites. One more Nugget before I go is to make a page for your business on sites like Tumblr.com and Posterous.com These are great places to get the backlinks your site needs from other authority sites like we spoke about above. Take this info and use it to your benefit, it will help you out and not raise any flags with Google. The key is to appear natural. We are natural but if you start filling your site with a ton of links and throwing your site links around like a wild man it will not be natural and you will be penalized by Google for it.

So I thought the least I could do is share a post about their website and what it means to me and what it can mean for your business. I have been a member of Thumbtack for I would say at least a year. If you know me you know that my business has only been around for just over a year. I hope that there will be a number of new readers that don’t know me and I have the pleasure of meeting you via blog posts and comments. I was a bit leary of joining thumbtack when I found it because I have been burned by a site in the past that claims to build your reputation and the only thinkg I got was a bunch of spam to my facebook friends and it was a nightmare. There’s also links in there to some paid stuff and I can totally understand why they included these because they are truly helpful things and some pretty good deals too.

The e-book is very nicely produced and you can tell that this isn’t just something that got slapped together in 15 min. to try and bait people into a bigger one time offer or something like that. From the graphics of the layout this thing is first class with built-in internal navigation links and the works. There are seven sections to the e-book which cover:

Modifying an existing PLR product

Creating a sales page

The e-book is very concise and my favorite part is that it comes with a very well produced audio version where each one of the chapters is a downloadable MP3 file that you can put on your iPod or on your desktop for later. You can also just click the play button for each chapter and listen to it right on the website so these are pretty neat features.

As a basic member you also have access to the resources page which are basically offers two similar products and there’s also a non-advertised free bonus in there which is totally free and I’m pretty sure I’m not allowed to mention what it is here but trust me it’s at least a $20 value and you’re gonna love it if you’re into private label rights products and product creation.

They also offer a $27 membership which is called the “pro member” I can’t stress how much this is worth the investment of an extra for $22. As a matter fact you should just go ahead and grab the Pro membership right from the jump because I assure you you’re gonna love this. They give you a PLR product library of 40 pre-created, in demand products that you can claim authorship on right away. And on top of that, you get 10 full-length videos that teach you exactly how to modify the PLR make it unique and create an entire sales funnel from scratch. They even give you the sales page templates and everything you need right there in the members area. So you literally have 40 products of your own to sell right away. Your own product catalog back and start making you money whenever you want and it only cost you $27!

Now if you’re really serious about your Internet business and you want to pop out your own information products often (which we all know is the way to keep the money coming in while you sleep) then you are definitely going to want to spring the extra 40 bucks and get the Mac daddy membership. For $67 you get everything I mentioned above and they also give you unlimited access to the product creation software for life. The software is basically a digital information products creation tool. You can easily make e-books and reports that look really really good by filling in the boxes with your own information and clicking the render button. So this is gonna save you a huge amount of time and you’re not have to fumble around with Microsoft Word or any kind of text editing software to create fancy looking e-books. It’s all right there, and it comes with the PDF manual and video tutorial to teach you how to use the software. But you probably won’t need the manual as this thing is dropdead easy to use.

As a Mac daddy member they also give you resell rights to speedy profit creator. Now you can sell the entire thing but as a reseller they let you sell the basic version and they supply the website, the sales video and everything you need to be up and running.

Inside the site you’ll also see offers for mentorship, done for you service and another product called my unfair advantage created by the same author whose name is Omar Martin. If you do some research on this guy and his company like I did, you’ll find that he’s the real deal. He’s been an Internet marketer for quite some time and he’s got a pretty big following plus he is also the creator of IMTrustWorthy.com which I’m sure you’ve heard by now.

Overall this thing gets 4 1/2 stars for me. I particularly liked the way that they presented the offer. It was very upfront no up sells are down sells. They simply laid out the three options and let you pick which ever one you want. Not many people do that nowadays and I can really appreciate an Internet marketer that is upfront and honest about his products. I can’t comment on their support because I haven’t had any issues to speak of. But they do have an FAQ as well as a support desk link inside of the members area. And get this they even give you their phone number so if you have any issues you can call them and speak to someone directly. All in all this is an awesome freaking product and you should buy it.

Now for my personal review of Omar’s Product and his business as a whole. I  am a member of both Speedy Profit and MUA “My Unfair Advantage” I can confirm what was said above about Omar being an upfront type of guy that isn’t going to trick you into something. Instead you get something unexpected, Results and more information than you signed up for. Omar Martin is a class act when it comes to business relations. He stands behind everything he does if it has a price tag and if you are not happy you will be refunded but honestly I can’t see anyone having the balls to ask for a refund when you get so much content and good information to help you along the way with both of these products. I am in the midst of writing my ebook and this is just the tool I was looking for. I am so glad I found Omar to deal with before I was sucked into someone that is only in it for the buck. Omar is here to help you and that’s what you get. Straight forward hassle free instructions with more than enough information on any topic that you will ever need. He holds weekly webinars for his members on top of all the other stuff you will be blown away at the amount of attention and detail he puts in to every single customer/ member. Google search results back to a 7 pack!

First of all I’d like to wish everyone a Happy Easter Sunday!

Being in the game of search for some time now we have noticed all the recent changes that Google has been throwing at us over the last year or so. It appears that they are going back to the older way of showing results when you do an everything search from the Google home page.

About 2 years ago Google had a 7 Pack to show the top 7 Google Places listings for the term searched for. Everyone thought they had it down and counted on this results format. Then Google changed things up more than once. I’ve seen a 3 pack a 5 pack as well as the original 7. Well it appears they went back to the old way’s of showing you the top 7 places pages in the organic search results, here is an example of a search done today 4/8/12

There is a lot of competition for insurance and I’m proud of the fact that we accomplished a number 1 spot for Rocco Rose Insurance. Yes they are one of my clients :) Another lesson learned! Look how I built a link for them in this post, thus giving their page a bit of Authority with a good link to their website. This is what google is looking for! Not a catch all but a definite builder of authority. This along with lot’s of other tips and tricks that I will soon be releasing on how to get your business to the top of a Google search!

Now this is the same type of search for CPA’s which is a very competitive market and they are only showing 3 results for the hot pack of places. This was only back in October of 2011 about 6 months ago.

I’m liking this look more as it isn’t as cluttered and you can actually see that they are a local business. This also opens the doors to a new approach on getting clients as you can always suggest getting them to the top of a google places search results page. This leaves room for obtaining new clients in the same field. Some people don’t like to do that at all thinking it creates conflict of interests. Personally there is plenty of businesses out there to work with so you wouldn’t have to be in that situation, but sometimes it’s unavoidable. This is when you explain that you will get them to the top of a results page, Not to number 1. As this is not something you can control but we do our best to maintain and optimize so that our clients do get to the number one spot. We just can’t promise that as a result of our efforts.

It’s been a little while since I’ve had time to post and it being Easter Sunday gave me a few minutes to sit and take a look at what’s going on today.  I actually like the pages the way they are now. Let’s just hope Google can realize this and keep it that way for more than a few months. This is one of the things that small businesses don’t realize or  have the time to even notice. That is why it is so important as a marketing agent or social media manager to stay on top of the little things that matter.
